Beginner Guide to the Gas RC Buggy

Intermediate Level: If you like BIG, then you'll love the gas RC buggy. These are 1/5 scale (the vary from 1/4 to 1/6) radio controlled buggy and trucks...the biggest of them all...and these "big boys" run on gasoline!

The most popular brand is FG although Traxxas, XTM and Duratrax have each released their own large scale gas RC Truck and/or gas RC Buggy.

How big is BIG? Here's a comparison of the Traxxas 1/5 scale Buggy to it's 1/10 scale Buggy:

One of the first great advantages to a gasoline powered RC Truck, Car, or Buggy, is that one tank of gasoline can last for over 45 minutes. You don't have to worry about short run times like you do with nitro and electric powered RC vehicles, or overheating your engine or having a steady supply of batteries to rotate in the charger.

Fill it up, prime the line, and pull the starter coil...that's it!

The Duratrax Fire Hammer is a 1/5 scale 2 wheel drive (rear) gas RC buggy that comes completely assembled with the Futaba radio system fully installed including FM transmitter, servos, receiver, receiver battery pack, battery charger plus a fail safe cut-off that immediately puts the throttle into a stop position if the vehicle loses signal from the transmitter.

This gas RC buggy weighs in at approximately 20 lbs and is over two feet long (28.1 inches). The recommended fuel mixture is 40:1 Gasoline/Oil Mix.

One of the things you'll notice is that the throttle servo also controls rear disk brakes. Click on the image here to see a larger view of the top of the chassis...

Traxxas has thrown their hat into the large scale gas RC buggy category with their 1/6 scale 2WD Monster Buggy (also shown above in size comparison shot).

This gas RC buggy weighs in at 22 pounds, is 26 inches long, 17 inches wide and 12.5 inches high. It's powered by a Zenoah 2 HP G230RC racing engine. This model does NOT come RTR with a radio system.

You will need to make sure that you also purchase a radio system designed for this sized vehicle which means getting a 2 channel transmitter and receiver pack, 2 heavy duty large servos, and a fail safe cut-off switch.

FG are the guys that wrote the book on the gas RC buggy, gas RC Stadium, and gas RC Truck. Their most popular models include the Marder, Marder Race, Marder Beetle, Monster Beetle, Monster Beetle Pro, MT-5 (monster truck), ST-5 (stadium truck), Leopard Race, and their Leopard STX...phew..that's a lot!

Newest additions include the FG Baja Buggy, Stadium Beetle Pro, Monster Hummer H2, Scout, and the ST-6. Some of these newer kits also now have the Zenoah G-260-04 that puts out about 4 HP @ 21,000 rpm.

And if that's not all, you will also be able to add a nitrous kit to your gas RC buggy!
